A quarter of parents have discussions about baby names

While one decides immediately, the other has to spend months brooding on a baby name. For some couples, choosing a baby name involves blood, sweat and tears. In fact, a quarter of the parents argue about it.

This is the conclusion of a study by Kaartje2go among more than 1,700 Dutch people.

Is not easy

Most parents (34%) didn’t have to think long about a baby name. After four to five months of pregnancy, they were gone. This was a lot more difficult for more than a quarter of the couples: they could not agree and argued freely. 33 percent of parents waited until the last trimester to choose a baby name. Not surprising, because a child’s name must meet all kinds of conditions. For example, parents think it is important that a name fits well with the surname (also to prevent a ‘shame name’ like Connie Comen, of course). Other conditions mentioned are a name that is easy to pronounce, a name that is not very common, a short name or one that fits other children’s names.

Keep baby name secret

When the baby name has finally been chosen, 86 percent of parents prefer to keep it secret until after birth. That’s not easy, according to the research, because 1 in 10 parents talk before then. In any case, be careful with whom you share the baby name, because people sometimes run off with your idea. 10 percent of the Dutch say that their baby name was ‘stolen’ by someone they know. In most cases (40%) it was an acquaintance, to a lesser extent by a friend (23%).
