‘That this is still happening in 2023’

Patricia van Liemt is a radio presenter, writer and mother of Maria (12) and Phaedra (9). Every Friday she writes striking, honest, funny and above all recognizable columns about her life and motherhood.

After breast milk gate of the past two weeks I sought refuge in other places than the usual. I left Facebook and associates for what they were, but to satisfy my digital sigh, I visited the safe LinkedIn a bit more often. After all, that’s where the grown people with real jobs post about serious things. That seemed like a safe place to relax without too much FOMO. Was I wrong!

Sex education

I came across an article about sex education that sounded the alarm.

The piece had the following headline: “In the Netherlands, Christian students also learn about the sticky tape metaphor: the more often you have sex, the more difficult it is to commit later.”

These findings surfaced as a result of the ‘Week of the Spring Fever’ (you are now familiar with it). It turns out that at Reformed and Evangelical secondary schools, young people receive sex education through the metaphor of adhesive tape, among other things. A student tells in the article how she gets the metaphor explained.

Piece of tape

During a guest lecture, the information officers ran a piece of adhesive tape along the clothing of the students. The piece of tape became a little dirtier and eventually lost its adhesive power. “Look how dirty you are” said the information officers, pointing to the dusty piece of tape. “If you kiss in a club or have sex, even if you already touch a shoulder, you are dirty. Just like this tape.”

holy shit!

In 2023

In the same article I also read that the tape metaphor is frequently used in America. And that a video about this on TikTok has already been viewed more than 3 million times. Only they use a little nuance there. The tape metaphor is especially true for girls.

“A small nuance: the tape metaphor is especially effective on girls”

Sigh.

Besides the fact that it is harmful to young people, I also really think it is a shame that this is still happening in 2023, because the Netherlands is known for our good sex education. Let’s all watch out for that. Fortunately, there are a number of sexologists who call on RIVM to review the Christian teaching program of WISeducation. And give the right message:

“At school, people no longer teach that the earth is flat.”
