Google AI Bard will soon be greatly improved by language model upgrade

The language model of Google’s AI Bard will soon be upgraded. This should significantly improve Google’s artificial intelligence. That’s what Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in the New York Times podcast.

Bye LaMDA

The idea is that the AI will soon be transferred to PaLM (Pathways Language Model) instead of LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), on which it is now based. The upgrade will likely be available next week, so if you have access to Bard’s beta, keep an eye out for it next week. At the moment, Bard is based on the language model LaMDA, but on a fairly light version. LaMDA is a language model created by Google that was first demonstrated in 2021. It is somewhat smaller than the GPT-4 language model, which is behind Google’s major competitor, ChatGPT.

Pichai sees that too. “In some areas I think we use a souped-up Honda Civic in a race with more powerful cars.” PaLM has to give that car the horsepower to compete in that race. For example, the newer, larger model can program better and reason better logically. Google has so far been very rushed with Bard: according to some, even too much. We are curious if it is true that Google’s Bard is indeed making rapid progress after the transition from LaMDA to PaLM.

Hello PaLM

Google said the following about PaLM in 2022: “It helps with questions, proverbs, arithmetic, code completion, general knowledge, reading comprehension, summarization, common sense reasoning, pattern recognition, translation, dialogue, joke explanation, physics QA, and language comprehension.” All this by both recognizing natural language and speaking it yourself. For example, if you give him a word list and say: indicate which two words correspond most closely to the word XXX, you may actually get a correct answer, because he understands what all those words mean.

You can ask the AI all sorts of logical reasoning questions. You can even drop a few emoji and ask which movie it should represent. Don’t understand a joke on the internet? PaLM is happy to explain that to you as well. Although of course that usually takes the joke out of it.

Jokes declared dead or not, Bard will be a lot better very soon. Do you already have access to the beta? Leave it in the comments.
