release date, gameplay, news, all about the return of Capcom’s cult game
Resident Evil 4, one of the cult episodes of Capcom’s horrific saga, returns on March 24, 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC in a brand new formula. With this remake, the studio intends to dust off the title released in January 2005. We take stock of everything you need to know: release date, gameplay, new features.
For a few years now, Capcom has made a habit of giving a second life to the cult episodes of Resident Evil. This was for example the case of Resident Evil 2, which received a quality overhaul on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Shortly after, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis also had the right to a remake, much less successful, however, due to the absence of the original game’s flagship levels (notably that of the bell tower).
Despite everything, the critical and commercial success was there. Enough to motivate Capcom to in turn offer a second life to Resident Evil 4, a cult episode which marked a profound break in the gameplay and the tone of the saga. With this episode signed by Shinji Mikami (the father of the saga), Resident Evil has turned away from horror in favor of pure and hard action (until turning into Call of Duty Like with Resident Evil 6).
However, Capcom did confirm the news during Sony’s State of Play on June 2, 2022. Yes, Resident Evil 4 will be making a comeback on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC. Via this file, you will find everything you need to know about this redesign of the misadventures of Leon Scott Kennedy: release date, gameplay and new features.
🗓️ When is Resident Evil 4 Remake coming out and on which platforms?
If you are curious about the idea of discovering this cult episode revisited, know that you will have to wait until March 24, 2023, official release date of the remake of Resident Evil 4. The title is expected on PS5, Xbox Series X/Series S and PC. Regarding the older generation, this remake will also make its debut on PS4, but not on Xbox One or Nintendo Switch.
Since the beginning of March 2023, it is even possible to have a taste of the title thanks to a playable demo available on the Playstation Store and the Microsoft Store. The opportunity for players to discover the first twenty minutes of the game. Be careful however, do not be fooled by the graphic aspect of the demo, which is rather disappointing outdoors in particular. In effect, the final version of the game is much more pleasing to the eye. In our opinion, the demo is probably taken from an older build of the title.
đź“„ What is the story of Resident Evil 4 Remake?
Unsurprisingly, the story of Resident Evil 4 Remake broadly resumes that of the original opus. Nevertheless, Capcom specified that it intended to carry out certain alterations, with a view to modernize the story and the staging. As we mention in our full Resident Evil 4 Remake test, this is indeed the case. Some passages have been deleted, others rewritten. In the end, the story wins.
As you can imagine, the player once again finds himself in the shoes of Leon Scott Kennedy. The main character of Resident Evil 2 is no longer the rookie agent he was during the Raccon City disaster. Six years have passed, during which Leon has risen through the ranks. Now Special Agent attached to the President of the United Stateshe is sent to Spain for a most urgent mission.
In effect, Leon is tasked with finding Ashley Graham, who is none other than the president’s daughter. A mysterious sect organized his kidnapping. His investigations take him to a small Spanish village lost in the mountains. Only, Leon will quickly understand that a terrible evil is eating away at the inhabitants… Here he is plunged into a new nightmare.
🎮 Resident Evil 4 Remake gameplay
For this remake, the task was different for Capcom. Here, there is no need to revise the gameplay from top to bottom, unlike RE 2 and RE 3 where the studio swapped static shots for a modern TPS view.
RE 4 being itself the inventor of this famous shoulder camera, there was no need to make any changes on that side. On the other hand, it was necessary at all costs to review the handling of Leonworthy of a 38 ton in the original episode.
On this point, Capcom has made sure to streamline the whole, in a certain way. If we are far from having the agility of a Gears of War or a The Division, Leon can now aim while walking, crouch to pass discreetly into the enemy ranks, dodge hits by pressing L1 at the right moment and switch weapons on the fly via a radial menu.
Regarding the very structure of the game, we remain on a linear adventure with a few welcome breaths, materialized in particular by the integration of side quests and more pronounced exploration.
Other point, Ashley’s artificial intelligence has been overhauled. Well, don’t expect a miracle from that side. If she is more resourceful and autonomous than in the past, she remains the number 1 in the art of being kidnapped every 30 seconds by the first henchman who comes along.
Subtle changes to gameplay and structure, revamped level design and what else? This Resident Evil 4 Remake is above all like a graphic slap.
It’s simple, the RE Engine graphics engine works wonders. Sumptuous light effects both outdoors and indoors, dense and thick fog, detailed textures, monsters larger than life, this RE 4 Remake is a feast for the eyes. “This time, we are developing the game with the aim of offering an exceptional level of quality up to what we can expect from a survival horror in 2023, while preserving the essence of the original game”. assured Capcom. The promise is kept.
