the first details on the photo sensors are revealed
Every spring, Sony launches its new high-end smartphone, the Xperia 1. The fifth iteration is expected in 2023. The first details about its photographic elements have leaked on social networks. The main module would still integrate three 12-megapixel sensors on the back and a fourth on the front, but the size of the sensors would change.
If you visit the site of DxO Mark to know, according to the French laboratory, the list of the best smartphones for taking photos, you will find that the brands present in the Top 10 are Huawei, Xiaomi, Apple, Honor and Google. Samsung only comes in 11th position. The same for Vivo. The first smartphone signed Sony only arrives in… 55th place. This is the Xperia 5 IV, followed by the Xperia 1 IV in 56th. These are not very glorious places for the firm which manufactures the majority of the photo sensors present in the best smartphones.

Faced with this observation, we hope that the successor to the Xperia 1 IV will be able to restore Sony’s credentials. But we risk being disappointed. Indeed, the first information on the Xperia 1 V tends to think that Sony will remain partly on its achievements. We noticed it with the first stolen photo of the smartphone that we relayed in our columns at the beginning of February.
And this is confirmed with a new leak from Weibo and reported by the Japanese site SumahoDigest. According to the original leak, the Xperia 1 V will retain a photo configuration quite similar to its predecessor: 3 sensors at the back and 1 at the front. And all will have a 12 megapixel resolution. Like in 2022.
The photo sensors of the Xperia 1 V would be bigger
On the other hand, the size of the sensors would evolve. Because larger sensors absorb more light at the same focal aperture. And who says more light, obviously says more details, more contrasts, more colors. The main sensor would therefore increase from 1/1.7 inch to 1/1.4 inch (the smaller the number below, the larger the sensor). Be one 21% increase in area. This means a 21% increase in pixel size. It’s a lot.
The telephoto sensor would increase from 1/3.5 inch to 1/2.9 inch. And the selfie sensor would go from 1/2.9 inch to 1/2.4 inch. In both cases, the increase would be equally significant. On the other hand, the ultra-wide-angle sensor would remain at 1/2.5 inch. But, it’s definitely the one that needs that size increase the least.
While this information is interesting, it is incomplete. The volume of light received by a sensor depends on its size, of course, but also on the aperture of his lens. And the new data was not leaked. Also, the number of lenses and the focal length are important. In short, we will have to wait to find out if Sony’s proposal can catch up with the firm’s delay against Huawei, Honor, Apple or Xiaomi.
