Create and send your own gif via WhatsApp: that’s how it works

Do you want to make a gif yourself and send it via WhatsApp? Which can. In this article, we’ll explain how to make GIFs from new and existing videos.

Explanation: create your own gif in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has a huge collection of GIFs to send to each other, but you can also send your own animations. That way you can, for example, show what kind of strange face your baby makes or how cute your pet is. Sending a gif via WhatsApp is very simple, as long as you know how it works:

  1. Open the WhatsApp app and tap the chat with the person you want to send a gif;
  2. Press the camera icon and tap the circle to start filming;
  3. Keep your finger on the screen to film, as soon as you take it off the recording will stop;
  4. Tap ‘Gif’ in the top right and send the animation.

Do you not see a ‘Gif’ icon during the last step? Then your video is probably longer than six seconds. WhatsApp can only send gifs when they are six seconds or less.

Convert video to gif

It is also possible to make gifs of existing films afterwards. For this only need the video. Converting to gif can be done in WhatsApp and goes like this:

  1. Open the WhatsApp app and go to the conversation with the person you want to send a gif;
  2. Tap the plus sign and select the video you want to make a gif from your gallery;
  3. If necessary, shorten the video to a maximum of six seconds and tap ‘Gif’ at the top right;
  4. Press the send button to send the video.

During step four you have to shorten the movie. You do this by bringing the timeline closer together. You can only create a gif if the trimmed video is six seconds, or less.
