‘Smartphone market collapsed, but foldable smartphones will make it’
Expectations are high when it comes to new foldables. Several manufacturers have a foldable phone in their portfolio, and it looks like these devices will save the collapsed smartphone market.
Foldable smartphones on the rise
Where a few years ago you still doubtfully looked at the foldable smartphone, that must soon be completely different. Samsung, for example, is already committed to new models in the foldable series Fold and Flip every year. With a market share of 82 percent, Samsung is also the market leader in the range of foldables. The company has done this so far with, for example, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, Motorola also has a foldable smartphone in its portfolio, namely the Motorola Razr. In the coming months we expect smartphones in a foldable jacket from Oppo and Xiaomi, among others. There are also reports about Google’s new Pixel Fold.
Because the range of this type of device is growing, it is expected that sales will also grow considerably. According to research agency Trendforce, an increase of 44 percent is expected. According to Counterpoint, also a research agency, the increase would even amount to 52 percent. Where the smartphone market itself has collapsed considerably in terms of sales, the foldable smartphone should provide relief. According to Trendforce, 12.8 million foldable devices will be sold in 2022. This year a number of 18.5 million is expected.
In 2023, the focus will be on reducing the presence of the fold in the screen, according to reports published so far. In the summer we can expect the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 from Samsung, that is the expectation.
