New dishwashers or refrigerators use much less energy than old ones. In a first German city, there is now a scrapping bonus of up to 150 euros if consumers decide to buy a new device. The age of the devices is crucial.

Stuttgart: scrapping bonus for kitchen appliances started

In Stuttgart, consumers can look forward to a new scrappage premium. The capital of Baden-Württemberg is participating in the device replacement campaign via a funding program of up to 150 euros leap when deciding on an efficient new device. Depending on the type of old device, different conditions apply in terms of age. Stuttgart citizens and organizations can take advantage of the funding program with immediate effect.

Buyers of new devices can look forward to a bonus of 50 percent of the purchase price of the new purchase, but a maximum of 150 euros. Funding for several devices can also be applied for at the same time. Refrigerators and freezers, washing machines and dishwashers can be claimed.

Important is the age and the efficiency class of the old devices. For refrigerators or freezers over 145 cm, the efficiency class must be C or higher, for smaller ones D or higher. They must also be at least 15 years old. 12 years is sufficient for washing machines and dishwashers. A copy of the proof of purchase must accompany the application along with a photo of the nameplate. Proof of disposal of the old device is also part of the application.

The appropriate form is available on the website of the city of Stuttgart (Source: Stuttgart.de). It must be printed out and sent by post, a purely online process is not intended.

Money for old kitchen appliances all over Germany?

It remains to be seen whether the Stuttgart example will catch on. As early as September 2022, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag introduced a nationwide bonus for all larger household appliances such as washing machines, dryers and refrigerators. Since then, however, nothing has happened in this regard.
