A real flagship killer for 2021

At today’s event in China, Motorola decided to introduce its new smartphone called the Edge S. An interesting fact is that this is the very first novelty, which has a Snapdragon 870 processor from the workshop of the American giant Qualcomm.

As for the design of the new Motorola Edge S smartphone, you will definitely recognize it from the current models. But it is very interesting that the phone, which has the word “Edge” in its name, does not have curved edges of the display. The screen is so flat that many users will find it an advantage.

Speaking of the display, it has a 6.7-inch diagonal, a very wide 21: 9 aspect ratio, Full HD + resolution (1080 x 2520 pixels), a density of 409 pixels per inch, a 90 Hz refresh rate, HDR10 support or color matching spectrum of DCI-P3. It is an LCD panel. In the upper left part of the display there is a pair of “selfie” sensors, which we can still get to.

In terms of performance, future users can look forward to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, which offers a twelve percent faster CPU than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 865, and an increase in performance of the GPU by another ten percent. The manufacturer itself states that their novelty is able to achieve a higher score in the AnTuTu Benchmark than the Xiaomi Mi 10. On this benchmarking platform, the model achieved a truly respectable 680,826 points, which is a significant jump compared to the aforementioned Xiaomi Mi 10.

We can thank not only the new processor, but also, for example, Turbo LPDDR5 RAM, which according to the GizmoChina website is up to 72% faster than LPDDR4. The smooth running of the smartphone is further underlined by the fast UFS 3.1 storage, which is 25% faster than UFS 3.0.

Solid camera features you may already know

On the back, which is formed to the sides by elegantly curved glass, there are four sensors, which again can resemble some of the stove. The main sensor has 64 MP and a brightness of f / 1.7. This is followed by a 16 MP ultra wide-angle sensor with a 121-degree angle of view. At the same time, it can serve as a macro camera, capable of taking photos up to a minimum distance of 2.8 cm. Finally, we still have a 2 MP sensor for measuring the depth of field, along with a ToF sensor.

“Selfie” cameras on the front are also very capable. The primary is 16 MP and the company makes it an 8 MP sensor with a 100-degree angle of view. You will use it especially when you are trying to create a group photo that needs to be accommodated by several people. Software is also important, so you will be pleased that the photo application has various dedicated functions, such as “vlog mode”, “night mode”, “audio zoom” 6K video or 4K video at 60 frames per second.

Using a graphical extension for Android 11 will probably be a question

It is worth mentioning that the phone will not be sold at least in its home market with the ZUI extension, but we will see the so-called “MY UI”. This graphical extension is to be built on the core of the Android 11 operating system. The company states that it will be a faster and more efficient solution for the user environment of the Motorola Edge S smartphone.

Before mentioning the competition, we will add that the Motorola Edge S has a 3.5 mm audio jack connector for wired headphones. There must also be a USB-C port for today’s relatively slow, 20 W charging of the integrated battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh and, of course, for data transfer. The IP52 certification, support for two SIM cards, Bluetooth 5.1 technology and fast GPS are also nice.

Another, very interesting factor is the price. Many of you will definitely be surprised to say that this is not a flagship phone. The competition is extremely impressive with its hot price tag, starting at $ 310 for a basic variant with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage costs $ 371, and the best-equipped model with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of memory is expected to cost only $ 433.

If the Motorola Edge S enters our market as well, it is clear that prices will rise. Nevertheless, it is a meaningful device that can be decided by practically anyone who is looking for a well-equipped smartphone for a favorable amount that will not empty your wallet. By the way, the phone can already be pre-ordered in China.

Competition

Despite the fact that the competition is very difficult to choose, as it is a device with a price known only in the Chinese market, we decided to choose a few smartphones. If the price of the new Motorola Edge S is kept relatively low, it will be quite difficult to find the right competitor.

In the price range, slightly exceeding 500 euros, the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G has a firm place in our opinion. Yes, they definitely have to face some of the competition, but thanks to the 144 Hz display, 5000 mAh battery, nice design, decent camera and flagship performance, they can playfully beat them.

Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G will simply be bought by those looking for a flagship killer. But that will be the Motorola Edge S. We have to admit that I expected something more from the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro cameras, but minor shortcomings will make up for great performance, a successful superstructure, stereo speakers, 5G connectivity, or in some cases a frosted glass on the rear side. However, you need to get a certain color variant of your smartphone. The phone is very well designed and can compete with flagships. Xiaomi did a respectable job and we would definitely recommend buying a model.

The Huawei P40 is a model from last year’s flagship series from rival Chinese giant Huawei. Despite the absence of Google services, it is an excellent smartphone. Its primary focus is, of course, the cameras, which belonged and still, in our opinion, are among the best in the world. You don’t even need its “Pro” version to star your photos.

We have to say that the new photo quality on the Huawei P40 will not even reach. The performance is also great and we also have an OLED display. However, it is only 60 Hz, which is a slight disappointment. The battery is also a little worse. However, the Huawei P40 is practically the flagship, or rather belongs to last year’s flagship line. The Motorola Edge S will be a smartphone from another barrel.

Finally, we must also mention the very successful Motorola Edge. In our opinion, it is a very capable smartphone from the very top of the middle class. We consider the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor to be the only possible disadvantage, but the performance is more than enough after all. The beautiful, 90 Hz OLED display with extreme sideways curvature can be a disadvantage for some, but we really liked it.

Cameras are decent for that class. Of course, they will be better, but it will stand. The design is another strength of the Motorola Edge smartphone and its purchase is worth considering. We’ll see if the Motorola Edge S price is competitive enough for many to consider before this style.
