Why aren’t Google Fonts GDPR compliant?
The problem is easy to explain: Every time you visit a website that uses Google Fonts, these fonts are also always loaded from the Google server. At the same time, contact is established with the Google server, whereby the IP addresses are read out and stored. Google wants to use this to query whether something has changed in the font.
The solution: store fonts locally
To avoid always connecting to the Google servers when loading your website, you have the option of saving your fonts locally on your server or web space. The first step is to find out which Google Fonts you use on which websites of your customers.
You can see directly in the source code from which sources the data is loaded. This is exactly where you check at the end whether no more data is actually being forwarded to Google.
In the next step, download the Google Fonts you need. Mario Ranftl’s free service “google-webfonts-helper.herokuapp.com” is available for this. In the search field you enter the desired font and under points 1 and 2 you then select your character sets and font styles.
As soon as you have selected the font exactly as you need it on your website, the CSS snippet is available for you under point 3. This is how you embed the font in your website. Finally, you can download your individual font as a ZIP archive under point 4.
Then upload the file to your web space, copy the font into it and embed it in your CSS. To do this, delete the original CSS file of the Google Font and copy the CSS snippet into it.
In the last step, check if the override worked. To do this, we go back to the source code, as described at the beginning. If the previously displayed connections to the Google server are no longer displayed, but the local fonts, the local integration of your fonts has worked.
