A bigger screen, more memory, better sound: the new model is not a big hit, but it does come with some useful improvements.

There was widespread speculation in advance, now Nintendo has opened the curtain: A new variant of the handheld console Switch is here. The manufacturer has put the most prominent change in brackets after the name. The Switch (OLED) has a 7-inch screen with stronger colors and stronger contrasts. A 6.2-inch LCD variant still works in the normal model. The slightly larger screen fits in an almost identical housing to the standard version, because Nintendo has made the screen frame narrower. The display has the same resolution as its predecessor: 1080p (Full HD) via HDMI in TV mode, 720p (1280 × 720) is sufficient on the go. In addition to more memory and better sound, the Japanese handheld market leader has also come up with a new housing feature.

New station contains LAN socket

In addition to two USB ports and the HDMI connection, the switch station now also has a LAN socket. A better Internet connection can be achieved via an Ethernet cable directly into the router. The new base is compatible with the other models and vice versa: the new edition also charges on old stations. There are also a few improvements in the console itself: Nintendo has doubled the internal memory compared to the standard Switch. However, the 64 gigabytes can be expanded to up to 2 gigabytes via MicroSD as usual. In addition, better speakers should provide a plus in sound. The battery remained unchanged, it also lasts for around 5.5 hours in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Switch Lite should be able to run the game for four hours.

The external dimensions of the OLED variant largely correspond to the original. It has only increased in width by 3 millimeters. Including the Joy-Con controller, it also weighs 22 grams more than the Switch. Interested parties can order the new one in white or in the classic colors red / blue. In addition, the engineers have come up with an extendable stand, the so-called kickstand. It should provide more stability when playing at the table. The Switch (OLED) will be released on October 8th – at the same time as the new title Metroid Dread. Nintendo has not yet announced European prices – scene experts reckon with around 350 euros.
