‘Now, twenty years later, I am ashamed’
She was proud as a peacock on her shoulder tattoo when she was eighteen, but now, a completely different life further, Loes wonders if she should have thought a little longer about her tattoo.
Loes (41): “The day after my eighteenth birthday I had it put on my left shoulder: a large black Japanese dragon. I’ve always wanted a tattoo, but my parents didn’t allow it before. At the tattoo parlor I was looking for a picture of an artful dragon with flames. Beautiful, I would prefer to have it colored in red. Fortunately that never happened.

Now, more than twenty years and a completely different life, I am ashamed of my tattoo. I have a daughter and a nice relationship. My in-laws don’t know about my decal, according to my friend they would go into shock at the idea. So I wear high-necked sweaters and blouses and I wear cardigans in the summer. But not just for them.
In any case, people are easily startled when I walk with bare shoulders. You see them thinking: what a Tokkie mother. I get that, and I’m strongly thinking about having the thing lasered away forever.”
