It’s always a good time to play horror games. But the darker the season, the more scary such a game night can of course be. Be it exploring a horror village, diving into dark oceans or on the run from gigantic monsters: In the last few months some extremely successful and interesting horror games have been released, all of which are worth more than a glance.

We have selected eight of these games for you here. We made sure that there is something for everyone. Fans of splatter, psychological horror or a dense atmosphere will find the right games for them here. “Death Trash” can be described as a horror splatter role-playing game with a large dose of humor. In the open game world you pass quests, take care of your resources and fight against all kinds of meaty horror monsters. The game is still in Early Access and was developed by the developer Stephan Hövelbrinks alone. But the game can already convince with its bizarre pixel creatures and amusing dialogues. “Death Trash” is for you, if you are less interested in shock than having fun in a dense atmosphere and downright artistic splatter.

“Little Nightmares 2” * for Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, Stadia and PC

“Little Nightmares 2” skilfully continues the traditions of its predecessor. Again you are a tiny character in a world full of gigantic opponents. These seem to have sprung from a gruesome fairy tale book and, despite the rather funny look of the game, can give you a real scare. In a 2.5-D view, you jump, climb and puzzle your way through the levels and do everything you can to avoid being discovered. In the second part, you have a computer-controlled supporting character at your side, whom you can involve in solving the puzzles.

“Resident Evil 8” * for Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series and PC

Holidays in a snow-covered horror village should be just the thing right now. “Resident Evil 8” takes you into winding castles, steaming swamps and hideous factories. It gives you all kinds of weapons and begs you to survive. This survival horror may be more action packed than the first installments in the series, but it still works very well. Just getting to know the bizarre characters of this world and discovering their secrets can make for a few scary evenings. It’s best to play with headphones!

“House of Ashes” * Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series and PC

“House of Ashes” is the current part of the “The Dark Pictures Anthology” series by the makers who have also developed “Until Dawn”. These games are characterized by the many choices you have to make throughout the story. For example, the survival of many characters depends on how you choose – who you come to help or which path you take. “House of Ashes” puts you in the depths of a temple in Iraq and lets you control five characters. Incidentally, the game is also ideally suited for fellow players: inside who sit on the sofa next to you and help decide which fate should happen to the characters.

“Luigi’s Mansion 3” * for Nintendo Switch

Instead of horror, you will find amusing horror in “Luigi’s Mansion” – this is why this game is particularly suitable for younger players. But certainly also for the older ones who are in the mood for the typical Nintendo charm. In the third part of the series, it’s up to Luigi again to use his ghost vacuum cleaner to free a building of all kinds of creepy figures. This time he ends up in a luxury hotel with some idiosyncratic residents. So if you like playful horror more than a real horror shocker, you’ve come to the right place.

A young man returns to his home village in Switzerland after his grandfather was killed in a barn fire. But it quickly turns out that it was not an accident, but demonic forces had their fingers in the game. “Mundaun” stands out above all for its graphic style: hand-drawn backgrounds that create a very special atmosphere that has its very special horror. While you are exploring the peculiar village and walking in the footsteps of your grandfather, you should always get cold – and it is up to you to find out why.

“Subnautica: Below Zero” * for Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, Mac and PC

“Subnautica: Below Zero” is actually a survival game in which you have to collect resources and learn to manage them properly. Settled underwater in a gigantic ocean, you can spend hours exploring the area and discovering ruins. It could be almost meditative – if it weren’t for the many creatures that inhabit this ocean. “Subnautica” creates its horror through the constant feeling of unpredictability. Is there a terrible creature lurking behind the reef – or is there just a harmless school of fish? The game is fun in two ways: as a survival game with an open game world and as a horror game that actually doesn’t want to be.

“Observer: System Redux” * for Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, Mac and PC

“Observer” was first released in August 2017, but was reissued as a remaster for the launch of the new consoles. However, the game from the cyberpunk genre has not only been expanded to include content such as new story lines, but also uses the technology of the Next Gen. 4K textures and 60 fps do not make the only difference: the game also supports ray tracing, which means that the makes psychological horror experience even more impressive. You control a detective who can hack into other people’s thoughts and discover all kinds of scary things. After playing, you will likely think twice about whether it is really a good idea to be able to look inside other people’s heads.
