30% of users have paid for the use of weak passwords, the survey shows

Most of us know that we need to use strong passwords to use the Internet safely. However, memorizing dozens of complex passwords is challenging, so many users make it difficult to create them through bad practices. A GoodFirms survey now showed that as many as 30% of respondents paid extra for their negligence and fell victim to cyber attacks. The HelpNetSecurity portal addressed the topic.

The users interviewed have committed some common but incorrect password handling practices. These include sharing your login information with colleagues, family, or friends, writing down passwords on papers or diaries, using the same multi-page passwords, and changing your password only when prompted.

  • 62.9% of online users change their passwords only when prompted
  • 45.7% of users use the same password for multiple sites / applications
  • 52.9% of respondents shared their login details and password with colleagues, family members or friends
  • 35.7% of people still write down their passwords on sticky notes or in a diary
  • 30% of online users have been the victims of cyber attacks due to the use of weak passwords
  • 88.6% of respondents use two-factor authentication

Using strong passwords doesn’t have to be difficult

Research has further revealed how cybersecurity experts create unbreakable passwords. The key is to use two-factor verification and avoid simple words. They also recommend using VPN services, unique passwords composed of words that are not in the dictionary, or password management software that is found especially by less technically proficient users.

According to the company, password protection technologies are currently sufficiently reliable and accessible, but the decision to use them remains with the users.
