2.9 billion for innovations in battery production

No time right now?

Several European countries have joined forces to promote the self-sufficient production of batteries. In Germany, Tesla, among others, is involved.

Twelve EU members want to jointly invest a total of 2.9 billion euros in battery production. The European Commission has approved the project, like the Notifies the Commission. In addition, the federal states want to attract 9 billion euros in private investments. The project is planned to run until 2028.

Strengthen the entire value chain

The money is to be invested in the entire battery value chain, i.e. in the extraction of raw materials, the design and manufacture of battery cells and sets as well as in recycling and disposal.

42 small and medium-sized companies as well as startups are involved in the project. There are also 150 external partners, for example research institutions.

Tesla is one of the German partners

As part of the project, the German Ministry of Economic Affairs will invest in ACI Systems, Alumina Systems, BMW, Cellforce Group, ElringKlinger, Liofit, Manz, Northvolt, SGL Carbon, Skeleton Technologies and Tesla.

“Tesla’s main goal in this project is to develop and implement advanced manufacturing and recycling methods for Li-ion battery cells in order to significantly reduce the ecological footprint of cells and their unit costs,” explains the Ministry to.

Independent production in the EU

“Germany and Europe will develop competitive, innovative and environmentally friendly battery cells themselves,” said Federal Minister of Economics Altmaier according to the press release.

By 2025, the European battery industry should be able to equip at least six million electric cars a year. This should make the European industry more resilient and independent.
