1Password is ending support for many browser extensions

Password manager 1Password will soon become less accessible to a group of users. The company behind 1Password, Agile Bits, has announced that classic browser extensions are no longer supported. That’s not so much to do with that studio, but with the fact that Google no longer supports Manifest V2 on Chrome.

1Password states: “This is what you need to do if you are using the classic 1Password extension: Upgrade to 1Password 8 for Mac or Windows. Install 1Password via this link for your browser.” That is recommended for various 1Password users, because that is the only way to easily use the password manager in the browser. 1Password 8 was released in 2022 and faced a lot of criticism.

1Password introduces cloud storage with version 8. As a user you are obliged to use it and that is not something that all people who use a password manager are waiting for. They are afraid that their data is more likely to be stolen in a hack, because they can be found online. Don’t trust it anymore with all those Hacks of the past months.”

At the same time, the cloud does offer advantages, such as being able to synchronize data on different devices, and access it from all kinds of devices, so even if your phone is stolen or broken. But security is especially important with a password manager, so you can imagine why the change to 1Password 8 entails so much controversy.

Now you have to if you want to keep using 1Password, because the classic extension will soon no longer be available on Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave. When exactly that is, that is unclear. However, that may also be unclear from Google, which has already postponed the end of support for Manifest V2. However, it is not expected before October 2023 due to the notification to developers.
