1Password 8 is available on Mac: new interface and mandatory subscription

AgileBits is now releasing the stable version of 1Password 8 on Mac. The password manager had the right to a first presentation in August 2021. It was then a question of availability in early access. Today everyone can download the update in final version.

Availability of 1Password 8 on Mac

1Password 8 adopts a new interface that is closer to macOS Monterey, from the sidebar to the unified toolbar, including typography and iconography. This is also noticeable when used within Safari with the dedicated extension. There is also an indicator next to shared vaults, making it easier to identify private vaults and shared vaults.

Others include more efficient searching, a collections system to focus on specific items, more contextual information, better Watchtower tool, improved editing, and an improved browser extension. AgileBits evoked furthermore a system for retrieving data, such as draft items, recently deleted items or even going back to the previous version of an identifier.

Unfortunately, the password manager is no longer as well optimized as it used to be. The utility is written in Rust but also relies on Electron. This framework is criticized in view of its consumption of resources and the fact that it is a means of integrating Web elements into an application. We therefore lose the 100% native application side, which is a shame for performance.

Another bad news for 1Password 8 on Mac is the obligation to take out a subscription. Until now, it was possible to take out a subscription or choose a permanent license (even if it was “hidden”). With the new version, it’s a subscription and nothing else. The price is $2.99/month or $4.99/month for the family plan (up to five people).

If this point bothers you, you can stay on version 7 or switch to other password managers. Bitwarden is one of them that wants to be popular and comes close to 1Password.
