13x fun outings for children in the spring

Spring is in full swing, so it’s high time to go out with the family. For inspiration: a nice list with the best outings in the spring.

1. City trip

Visiting a city is always fun, but especially when the mercury rises towards 20 degrees. How about a day in Amsterdam with your child? Take a look at Artis, enjoy a canal cruise and relax in the Vondelpark. Amsterdam is a popular destination for tourists, especially in the spring, so be prepared.

If you want a slightly less touristy trip, our country has plenty of other nice cities to spend a day. For example, go to the cheese market in Alkmaar on Thursday, dive into the world of dinosaurs in Dinoland in Zwolle or enjoy a delicious Bossche Bol in Den Bosch.

2. Picking garden

Many picking gardens open their doors in May: roll up your sleeves and go in search of the tastiest fruits and flowers with your child in the sun. Of course you can pick yourself and take your full basket home afterwards. Many picking gardens have a café and some also have play areas for children. Do you want to know where there is a picking garden near you? Then check this list.

3. Into nature

With the nice spring weather, there is nothing more fun for your child than playing outside. Natuurmonumenten has created the OERRR Speelnatuur: places in nature where children can experience the coolest adventures. Climb over tree trunks, play with water pumps or build your own cabin in the woods. Meanwhile, you can enjoy the sun on the terrace.

4. Bike ride

Along various children’s farms, across the Veluwe or through the beautiful Bollenstreek: get on your bike and ride past the nicest spots. In between you stop for a nice lunch or an ice cream. Of course there are plenty of cycling routes on the internet, but it might be more fun to map out one yourself (or together with your child).

5. Amusement Park

Spring is without a doubt amusement park season. Whether you opt for a popular amusement park or a smaller-scale amusement park: the roller coasters are good for hours of fun. Check here for entrance tickets with a discount.

6. Climbing park

Is your child not afraid of heights? Then a course between the trees, via ropes, ladders, zip lines and bridges is ideal. In the Netherlands you have several climbing forests where you can let off steam. There are often various levels of difficulty, making this activity fun and suitable for everyone.

7. Outdoor playground

If you prefer to take it a bit easier, but your child likes to be outside, an outdoor playground may be more suitable. With play equipment, attractions and much more fun, your child will be entertained here for a few hours. (Before you get in the car or on the bike, check the opening times.)

8. Lamb Days

Farms across the country organize lamb days in the spring. And let’s face it: petting lambs always makes you happy. To give you a helping hand, we have listed 10 nice petting zoos in the Netherlands for you.

9. Birdwatching

How many bird species are there actually? Put binoculars on your child, buy a bird book (or download a bird search map from the internet) and dive into nature together. Tip: you will undoubtedly encounter the most beautiful specimens in these woods.

10. Picnic

There is nothing more fun than spreading your dress in the park or on a large lawn nearby with a well-filled basket. As anticipation, you can fill the picnic basket with your child. And take a ball, tennis racket or skipping rope with you right away.

Yes, a visit to ARTIS or Diergaarde Blijdorp is always fun. But did you know that the Netherlands also has a lot of lesser-known zoos and parks? So nice for a change. We have listed the 13 best unknown zoos for you.

12. Build huts

You get a hammer and a pot of nails and get to work with pallets and wooden planks. Your child can make his own hut, but also help build existing huts. There are several places in our country where this is possible, for example at Bouwgein in Nieuwegein. The last half hour you can decorate your hut with paint.

13. Monument village Orvelte

Dive into history in the village of Orvelte in Drenthe. You walk past monumental farms and encounter historical objects along the way, such as a bread oven and beautiful shops, and children can enjoy themselves in the Craft Garden. Many attractions can be visited for free, for some you pay a small entrance fee.
