11 tips to save on your holiday

If we have even a little time and money, we prefer to plan a city trip, a distant holiday with the family or a long weekend away. Escape the rat race, soak up culture and relax (as far as you can with children, of course). And if you book then, you would rather not pay the main price. You don’t have to, because with these tips you will go on holiday a lot cheaper.

Plan ahead: book your travel and accommodation early. The later you book, the more expensive it usually is.

Be flexible: If you’re flexible with your travel dates, such as traveling out of season or avoiding weekend flights, you’ll usually find better deals. Nice tip, but of course a lot more difficult with school-age children.
Go camping: cheap holiday? Just put up a tent. Camping is cheaper than a hotel or resort and you can also enjoy nature in the meantime.
Grab the car: drive yourself with a fully loaded car to your destination. It may be a big undertaking, but good preparation is half the work.
Eat locally or cook yourself: Eat at local restaurants and avoid expensive tourist restaurants. This way you can enjoy the local cuisine and save money. Are you staying in an accommodation with a kitchen? Then it is of course cheaper to cook yourself. And let’s be honest: supermarkets abroad are an outing in itself.
Avoid tourist attractions: these are often more expensive than lesser-known sights (which are often just as nice – and nice and quiet). Good reason to go off the beaten track.
Use public transport at your holiday destination: When traveling, use public transportation instead of a taxi or rental car. Cheaper and fun. Unless, of course, you go on holiday with your own car.
