1.3 million more Dutch TikTok users in one year

TikTok has 1 billion users worldwide and 3 million in the Netherlands. This is evident from information from Broadcast Magazine. It means that we have experienced enormous growth in TikTok use in the Netherlands, because it was still 1.7 million in 2021 and now 1.3 million more users.

However, it is not all positive news about TikTok: it appears that, just like Facebook and Instagram, for example, it is increasingly becoming a platform for adults. It is not a problem in itself that more and more people in their thirties and forties can be found on the platform, but at the same time TikTok sees the number of 15-year-olds stagnating enormously.

There is still growth in the group of people in their twenties, but that is probably the next group in which growth is slower. Moreover, the influx of adults brings with it another problem, because this means that more and more content is coming to TikTok that is slightly different than the average choreographies, skits and playback shows of the younger groups.

However, this cannot be completely prevented: after all, people who grow up with TikTok themselves are also getting older and they also have a need for other types of content. TikTok has been around since 2017. It is run by the Chinese ByteDance and is a kind of successor to Musical.ly. It is best known as a platform with fun choreographies to well-known songs (or songs that are even known purely through the choreos on TikTok). There are also many people who record videos in which they lip-sync: either to music or to a well-known skit.

TikTok is very popular in the Netherlands, but not the most popular. That is still WhatsApp, which would have 12.5 million users in our country. WhatsApp is owned by Meta, the parent company of Facebook. In any case, Meta is popular in the Netherlands: Facebook has 10.3 million users and is the second most used social media. So TikTok is far from over, but rarely have we seen such significant growth in such a short time.
