‘YouTube Premium will soon be a requirement for 4K videos’
With YouTube Premium you can watch videos without advertising, download videos and watch them offline for a fixed amount per month. Looks like we’ll have to add 4K videos to that list soon too.
4K videos only viewable with YouTube Premium
Several messages are posted on Reddit and Twitter with screenshots that show this. For example, in the image below you can see that YouTube has placed the option to watch videos in 4K resolution in the video settings under ‘Premium’. That would mean that the 4K video can only be viewed with a YouTube Premium subscription.
Not every YouTube user will see this new option. So it appears that Google is testing the feature among a select group of YouTube users to gather feedback. It is also not known whether Google plans to put the option under the YouTube Premium subscription. If the latter is true, we can imagine many users will be understandably shocked by this. On the other hand, other video platforms, such as Netflix, also offer the 4K option under a more expensive subscription.
Either way, we’ll have to wait and see if Google actually puts this idea into practice. YouTube Premium costs 11.99 euros per month and is part of a whole package of subscriptions. Editor Sebastien is not so happy about that.
In the meantime, is 4K the push you need to subscribe to YouTube Premium? Let me know in the comments.
