Your iPhone has a secret rainfall radar – this is how you activate it
With a rain radar you can see if you need an umbrella when you go outside. And did you know that the iPhone’s Weather app has a secret rainfall radar that shows you when and where it’s going to rain?
Read on after the ad.
iPhone rain radar
If you say rain map, you say Buienradar. But since iOS 15, it is not necessarily necessary to install this shower forecaster. The Weather app has something similar, although the option is quite hidden. Here’s how to navigate to Apple’s secret rain map:
- Open your iPhone’s Weather app;
- Tap the map-like icon at the bottom left;
- Tap the icon with the stacked squares in the top right;
- Choose ‘Precipitation’.
The app automatically shows a 12-hour timelapse of the precipitation during the day. The colors indicate how much rain is expected to fall during this period. At the bottom left you can press the pause button and scroll yourself to see when and where it will rain.
Rain Map Weather App Apple
The rain map is not very detailed, for that you still need the Buienradar app. But it’s nice that the Weather app now has such a map, and we expect Apple to add more features. For example, the Weather app will soon warn you with a notification if it is going to rain. This option is already available in some countries.
There are also maps for temperature and air quality. To see these, tap the button with the three squares in the rain map view at the top right. The temperature map speaks for itself; the colors indicate the temperature. Dark blue (or even purple) is icy cold and dark red is sweltering hot. The air quality shows how clean the air is on a scale from blue to red.
