You can only dream of these prices for petrol and diesel
E-cars are expensive to buy, but cheap to maintain – the calculation hasn’t always been that easy lately. But the extreme increase in petrol and diesel prices is bringing back the old advantage of the electric vehicle. If you are already driving an electric car, you will get away with it much more cheaply.

E-car drivers benefit: charging up with electricity is almost 60 percent cheaper
While at the pump prices are called up that no one could have even imagined in the last few decadesdrivers of e-cars pay significantly less for their charging current. This was the result of a study by the comparison portal Verivox.
Anyone who fills up the e-car at home is therefore average 59 percent cheaper away than with a comparable petrol engine (source: Verivox). Due to the slightly lower consumption, the difference to diesel is smaller, but only minimal: 57 percent savings are on the plus side for e-car owners.
For comparison, Verivox has determined the average consumption of the 10 most frequently registered electric cars in 2020, which should be 19 kWh per 100 km. Based on an average kWh price of 37.02 cents, the comparison experts come at the expense of around 7.04 euros for 100 km.

A petrol engine with an average consumption of 7.7 liters consumes fuel for the same distance at a price of 16.94 euros (2.2 euros per liter). Thanks to the lower consumption of 7 liters, a diesel comes to 16.22 euros despite the higher liter price of around 2.3 euros.
This will be particularly bitter for combustion engine drivers if the costs remain so high: with an annual mileage of 15,000 km e-cars have electricity costs of 1,055 euros. Petrol engines, on the other hand, collect a whopping 2,541 euros in fuel costs per year and diesel vehicles at least 2,433 euros. Since this peak, fuel prices have fallen again somewhat, but are still at a very high level.
Not only the high fuel prices speak for e-cars:
What electric car owners need to know to charge cheaply
But there is one requirement for the big price advantage: That E-cars must be charged at home if possible, because public charging stations, especially fast chargers, are more expensive. When charging with household electricity at the wall box, there is a cost advantage that is impressive.
Although e-cars should also have this cost advantage in the long term and combustion engines are counted anyway, that is Picture from today no guarantee. After all, the calculation – high acquisition costs, lower expenses afterwards – also applied to diesel for a long time. Now this is suddenly over, a liter of diesel is even more expensive than petrol.
