you can now make video calls in 1080p
Google Meet has been improved. The video meeting app now has 1080p image quality. That means you can now watch people in full HD. However, it is currently only available to part of the Workspace users and part of the Google One subscribers.
Google Meet
“Oh, you’re on mute”: almost everyone knows about video conferencing by now, but not many people know it very well. Google Meet wasn’t available in full HD until now, but that’s about to change. Google is launching Google Meet in 1080p image quality to a small group of people using Workspace or Google One. Hopefully it comes to the rest of Google Meet’s users soon too, as it’s a welcome upgrade.
To use it (if you have the option), you’ll need a 1080p camera, a good computer, and you’ll need to use the web version of Google Meet. The new HD resolution is off by default, but you can indicate before you enter the meeting that you would like to broadcast in 1080p image. You do this via the three dots, where you then see 1080p in the top right corner to indicate that you are in extra sharp focus. You can of course always adjust this via the settings menu. Google also warns about your internet, because you use more data because more information is literally sent.
Paying customers
You can read more about the 1080p resolution on Google’s help page. Google says it won’t be available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Nonprofits, G Suite Basic, Business, and people with a personal Google account. Whether that will change in the future is unknown. It appears to be and will remain an option for paying Google customers.
