Tip 1: Change SOS emergency notification buttons

In iOS 16.3, Apple made some changes to the SOS emergency notification. This feature allows you to quickly call emergency services when you need them. In older versions of iOS, you could set that you had to press the side button five times to summon emergency services.

Only it sometimes happened that you accidentally activated the function if you happened to press the button too often to turn it off again as quickly as possible. In iOS 16.3, this option is still there, but a different setting has now been added. This way you are less likely to accidentally activate it.

You can set that you have to hold down the side button and one of the volume buttons for the emergency notification. After pressing, a countdown button is first started and then you hear an alarm. Only when you release the buttons after the countdown has finished will the emergency services be called. Do you let go sooner? Then the SOS emergency call will be canceled immediately.

To use this new feature, follow the steps below:

  • Open the ‘Settings’;
  • Scroll down and tap ‘Emergency SOS’;
  • Turn on the slider at ‘Call with hold and release’.

Tip 2: alarm clock with ambient sounds on HomePod (mini)

In iOS 16.3 (and HomePod software 16.3), a new kind of alarm clock can be set on the HomePod (mini). With this you can now wake up with quiet forest sounds. You set this up in the following way.

Tip 3: New iOS 16.3 wallpaper with hidden feature

This last tip of our iPhone tips is about the new wallpaper. Your iPhone has received a new wallpaper with iOS 16.3. The Unity wallpaper was released by Apple to celebrate Black History Month and is available for Apple Watch, iPhone, and Mac.

When you set the wallpaper on an iPhone with an always on screen, there’s something special about it. The background changes when you lock the iPhone. You will then only see the lines of the wallpaper. A nice effect that does not work on all iPhones.

You must have set the lock screen to also show the wallpaper. You can check this by tapping on ‘Settings > Screen & brightness > Always on’. Ensures that the ‘Show background’ slider is set to green.
