Buying a cheap iPhone: you don’t pay too much
When you’re looking for a (new) iPhone, you never want to pay too much. A brand new iPhone remains quite pricey, but even then we have some tips for you to ensure that you have paid the best price.
1. Use the price comparator
Do you want to buy the latest iPhone separately? Then it is sometimes difficult to find the best price for new iPhones. In any case, check the price comparison of iPhoned† As an example, let’s take the iPhone 13 Pro (Max), Apple’s current top model.
Although there is currently not much to save on this brand-new device, the price comparison tool does give you an overview of all providers and their prices at a glance. That at least saves you a lot of research when you plan to buy a cheap iPhone.
2. Buying refurbished or used iPhone
Another option to buy an iPhone cheaper are refurbished or second-hand devices. Refurbished iPhones are devices that have received new parts and can be reused. This makes them like new and the great thing is that you can also save some money on the price.
A second-hand device is often a bit cheaper, but then you have to be sure that the selling party is reliable. So you often take a bit more risk than when buying a refurbished device.
Refurbished: cheap iPhone like new
The big difference between a refurbished and a used iPhone is that with a refurbished iPhone you have a device that is as good as new and you get a two-year warranty. In addition, the Refurbished quality mark offers some extra security when purchasing.
At the moment, however, there are no refurbished iPhone 13 devices available in our price comparison. But if you are looking for the iPhone 12 or iPhone 11, for example, there is plenty to find.
Buying a used iPhone: more risk
By far the most popular site where second-hand items are offered (in the Netherlands) is Marktplaats. You’ll find all kinds of new and used Apple products, but the iPhone is the most offered. There are many suppliers of iPhones, but at least as many people are looking for a new device. You often come across the latest iPhone devices here.
Once you have found a seller through the site who asks the right price for an iPhone, make an appointment to pick up the device. It is better not to have these expensive devices sent to you. Also agree on the price clearly in advance, so that you do not have to negotiate during the purchase.
Always check how many years someone has been a member on the site and his or her reviews. While you are there, also check the device for damage and check the serial number to make sure it is a genuine iPhone. You do this by checking the serial number of the iPhone.
Identify a fake iPhone by checking its serial number
- Tap ‘Settings > General > About’;
- Surf to the Apple Warranty Database and enter the serial number of the iPhone;
- Enter the code below and click ‘Continue’;
- You will then receive an overview of the device.
If the serial number is not valid or the iPhone shown does not match the model you have in your hands, then you are probably dealing with a counterfeit iPhone.
However, checking the serial number is not a foolproof method, because that number is also sometimes falsified. Always try out the iPhone and check, for example, whether you can install an app from the App Store, whether the common apps work well and whether the device and the camera respond smoothly.
3. Buy cheap iPhone: choose an older device
If you don’t necessarily want the latest device, there is quite a bit of profit to be made by choosing an older device. The iPhone 12 or the iPhone 11 are still fine phones, especially if you can find them for a good price. Keep in mind that older iPhones will receive support for new versions of iOS for a shorter period of time. Don’t go back too far, though, because you shouldn’t want the iPhone X in 2022.
Sometimes it is also useful to wait a little longer until the new iPhones have appeared. The current iPhone 13 will probably be a bit cheaper again when the iPhone 14 appears.

4. Buy your iPhone in another country
When you go on holiday in Europe soon, it sometimes pays to buy the device there. For example, an iPhone 13 in Switzerland is sometimes a few tens cheaper than in the Netherlands.
You should keep a few things in mind if you decide to buy an iPhone in a country outside of Europe. Not all frequency bands for 4G and 5G are always supported here. In addition, iPhones from some countries have their own quirks. For example, a Japanese iPhone always makes a sound when you take a photo.
You should also keep an eye on the warranty if you decide to buy a cheap iPhone abroad. Apple basically gives you a worldwide warranty and that’s nice. But if you have to return the device where you bought it, this may incur additional costs. In addition, the regulations in other countries are often slightly different and in the Netherlands you are often entitled to a longer warranty under Dutch law.
