With Schwung you cycle a lot faster through greenery
With the Schwung app on your iPhone, you can cycle through the green light much faster. Connected traffic lights know that you are coming, which means that you can sometimes reach your destination (much) earlier.

Schwung – nice and fast through green
The slogan of the app is ‘nice and fast through green’ and applies to cyclists and, secretly, also to walkers. Have you installed the app and are there already connected traffic lights in your municipality? Then you can cycle your route just that little bit faster. Great, because that way you don’t have to stand in the cold for minutes when you go out in the morning.
Via a map in the app itself you can see exactly where such traffic lights are. They can be found in Emmen, Breda, Lelystad, Den Bosch and Dordrecht, as well as in the Noordoostpolder and Flevoland. The company behind the app is in talks with many more municipalities. You can also always send an email to your municipality yourself, pointing out what Schwung can do.
Because the traffic lights on your route know that you are coming, you can request a green light just a little earlier. You also never have to manually turn anything on or off. The Schwung app automatically detects whether you are cycling and then starts up automatically. Ready with your bike ride? Even then you don’t have to do anything, because the app knows that. By the way, these are options that you have to turn on manually once.
This is how the app works
The app looks a bit basic and there are three tabs at the bottom: home, map and menu. On the first screen you can see how many Schwung intersections are nearby, as well as some statistics. For example, you can think of how many of those intersections you have passed today or how many cycling trips you have taken. You can also see the weather forecast for the next few hours there.
On the second tab you see the map, on which you can zoom in and out and check where the connected traffic lights are located. There is no specific search for a place name or street name. The last tab lets you play around with the settings. For example, you can indicate whether the app can detect that you are cycling or not and also whether your location can be shared in the background. You can also leave feedback there for the app developers and read more about the explanation of the application.
Do you already use Schwung and if not, would you install the app if it can be used in your hometown? We are of course curious as to why or why not, so let us know in the comments.
