Why you should install the Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 on your Pixel phone

Google is busy rolling out the new update for its Pixel phones. For example, we recently saw the security update and the Pixel Feature Drops from March (Android 13 QPR2) and now it’s time for Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1. You have to install it if you want to know what’s coming next month.

What is Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1?

Google is currently testing Android 14 with developers. That doesn’t mean Android 13 development has stopped yet. This just keeps going. Now Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 for Pixel has been announced. QPR3 stands for the third ‘Quarterly Platform Release’.

Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 can now be tested. If all goes well, Google will eventually roll out the stable version as the June 2023 Pixel Feature Drops. So if you install this beta version, you’ll get a first impression of what’s to come in June.

Obviously this is test software. So it may be that some things are not working properly. A few of these are already known and you can find them below. Google does indicate that Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 is suitable for general use.

  • If you try to open the camera by pressing the power button twice, the camera displays a black screen instead.
  • In some cases, when a work profile is enabled or disabled, the device reboots instead.
  • The recent apps list sometimes becomes unresponsive if the screen orientation is changed while the list is open.

How long is Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1?

Google will continue testing Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 until the first Android 14 beta launches. If you participate in the QPR3 beta, you will automatically receive an over-the-air (OTA) update for Android 14 Beta 1 as soon as it becomes available. No separate program opt-in is required. Google will provide more information about the Android 14 beta soon. We expect this release in April.

How to sign up for the Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1?

Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 is now available to those who have enrolled in the Android Beta program and own a Google Pixel 4a or newer. Google reports this on Reddit. Registering for that program is very easy, you can do that via this website. Make sure you’re signed in with the same Google account you used to sign in to your Pixel. You will then see a list of your devices that are eligible for the beta software. You can now check for new updates via Settings -> System update.

Fixed issues

Android 13 QPR3 Beta 1 also fixes some issues. You will find the most important ones below.

  • Fixed an issue where the clock text on the lock screen was the wrong color.
  • Fixed an issue where Bluetooth audio was not working on some devices.
  • Fixed an issue where the fingerprint icon that normally appears on the screen to indicate the position of the fingerprint sensor was incorrectly changed to an exclamation mark (!).
  • Fixed an issue where live wallpapers could not be selected or used.
  • Fixed an issue where widgets, app icon positions, and other configurable options on the home screen would reset after installing an OTA update.
  • Fixed an issue where a device would be unenrolled from Face Unlock after installing an OTA update.
