Now is a bad time to buy the iPhone SE
Apple is a company of traditions. For example, September is (almost) always iPhone month. This fall, we expect Apple to unveil four new devices: the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes the company also releases new devices in between. This last happened in 2020. Then the company released the iPhone SE 2020. Its predecessor comes from 2016 and so it was time for a major upgrade.
All the rumors point to Apple releasing a new model of the iPhone SE this year. Good thing too, because the predecessor may receive an update again, as you can read in our review update iPhone SE 2020. In the corridors we hear that the device will be announced at the end of April, or perhaps the beginning of May.
iPhone SE 2022 is just around the corner
The net around the iPhone SE (2022 version) is starting to close, because the device has already been officially registered with the inspection services. The design is also already on the street, as well as some specifications.
If you are currently in the market for a new iPhone, this is very important information. You can save a lot of money by delaying your purchase for a few months. Usually it is the case that older models drop in price after the announcement of a successor.
And if you don’t do it for the money, you do it for the phone itself. All rumors point to the iPhone SE 2022 getting several improvements, so it would be a shame to buy a lower quality device now (the iPhone SE from 2020).
Release in April or May
If the rumors are correct, Apple will announce the new iPhone SE in late April or early May. This might happen during an (online) event, or simply via a press release (as happened with the iPhone SE 2020).
Our advice is therefore simple. Do you not immediately need a new iPhone and can you muster some patience? Then wait until the successor to the iPhone SE 2020 has been announced. If the new model is disappointing, you can always purchase the 2020 version.
Is it unwise to buy an iPhone SE 2020 now? No definitely not. If you simply need a new iPhone now and the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 is too expensive, the iPhone SE 2020 is an excellent (and affordable) device. It is true that the timing is somewhat unfortunate, because the successor is now really almost there.
This is what we expect from the iPhone SE 2022
To get straight to the point: it seems that the iPhone SE 2022 will have exactly the same design as its predecessor. Recently, a photo of a dummy leaked out. So get ready for a compact device with a 4.7-inch screen (Retina display) and a home button (for the Touch ID fingerprint scanner).
Under the hood, the new iPhone SE is likely to be powered by the A15 Bionic. We know this fast chip from the iPhone 13 family and it has support for 5G internet, for example. The iPhone SE 2022 is rumored to start at 489 euros. If you opt for more storage, the price will of course go up.
