Why the film Mass Effect -apkrig was never made
In an interview with Insider, Mac Walters from the BioWare studio tried to explain why, despite the brand’s apparent attractiveness and great potential for film or television, we have not yet seen a feature adaptation of Mass Effect. He said a lot of people in the industry had asked when they would do it and said they had to do it. And he obviously thinks it will happen. The question is when will this happen.
According to Mass Effect, the film was actually worked on about 10 years ago. It was supposed to be created in collaboration with Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., but the fans didn’t see it. Although it is undoubtedly a very powerful model, a great and extensive universe that could theoretically compete with Star Wars, Star Trek and other similar sagas, its scope is paradoxically a bit of a nuisance at the same time.
“If you’re going to tell a story that is as elaborate as Mass Effect, television is the way to go.”
“What story should we tell in 90 to 120 minutes?” considers Mac Walters gave a rhetorical question about whether they would do it right. When the management of the Legendary studio changed, they wanted to move the project to television, saying that it would be best to start from the beginning. But none of that happened in the end.
While many Hollywood video game adaptations have failed, game series are now on track and a number are emerging. The question is whether this bubble will not burst again. In any case, Walters sees greater potential in the television adaptation. “If you’re going to tell a story that is as elaborate as Mass Effect, television is the way to go. It naturally suits the episodic format, “he said.
Mass Effect as an interactive Bandersnatch?
“When we create Mass Effect, we have the whole story we want to tell. But each level or mission is like its own TV episode, “he added. And according to these missions and their course, the main story is adjusted, says Walters. For game brands, therefore, according to him, a longer form of the series is a better way. Another problem can be the player’s choices and freedom, because Mass Effect does not have a single story, but each player has written his own. And Walters is clearly not sure if the solution would be an interactive story like the experimental Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
The film adaptation was announced in May 2010. The rights were acquired by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. and the executive producers were to be Casey Hudson, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuck of BioWare. Avi Arad was also involved in the project and the screenplay was originally to be written by Mark Protosevich, who has the film I, the Legend. The story had corresponded to the first game. In October 2012, Morgan Davis Foehl was to take over the screenwriting baton. The main character was to be Commander Shepard as a man. It was also considered that the film would tell its own new story.
What has Henry Cavill got to do with Mass Effect?
Already in 2012, however, at least the animated film Mass Effect: Paragon Lost was made. It acted as a prequel to Mass Effect 2. However, the event from February this year is worth remembering. British actor Henry Cavill (The Sorcerer, The Man of Steel) posted a photo on Instagram that some fans believed lured her to a Mass Effect project.
A picture of a make-up artist, on which the actor was holding some papers in his hands, appeared on Cavillo’s profile. GamePressure magazine successfully tried to sharpen the blurred page and decrypt the text that was supposed to remain hidden. And it includes terms and names well known from the Mass Effect series: Cerberus, Reaper, Geth and Tali’Zorah. However, he can also take part in the dubbing of the upcoming game.
