Why all of a sudden porn videos appear on reputable websites

If the current news reports suddenly show not entirely adult and lewd films, even the casual reader will notice that something is wrong here. But what is the reason for the involuntary porn offensive of some major media outlets?

Huffington Post, New York Magazine, Washington Post – they all suddenly started showing hardcore porn on their websites. What was the trigger? A protest action? A hacker attack? The answer is much shorter and easier to explain.

As the Twitter user “dox_gay” found out, the videos were integrated into the message texts via the Vidme service. Vidme existed between 2014 and 2017 and should compete with the market leader Youtube. This project did not succeed and the service ceased its activities. However, the domain continued to exist and has now expired. There is now a new owner. This is a porn site called “5 Star Porn HD”.

Between news and nudity

As a result, all embeds made with Vidme videos lead to the homepage of 5-Star-Porn-HD. No videos have to be included in the articles concerned. It is enough if such a video was embedded in a previous version at some point. This is shown by various archived versions of the individual pages. Such links can often still be traced in the source code.

For many readers, the unexpected videos are likely to have been amusing and disturbing at the same time. Under the Huffpost article on “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli’s Twitter ban, it was suddenly no longer about the US hedge fund manager, but about “Porsha’s Ass” and the question “Why Don’t We Tag Team Your GF” – and GF did not stand for managing directors in this case. The involuntary flood of porn in serious media shows once again one thing above all: the Internet never forgets.
