WhatsApp is getting more options for expiring messages

The ‘Messages with expiration date’ function in WhatsApp is getting a number of durations. Of the three options that are currently available, no fewer than twelve will be added. This gives you more options to make your messages disappear after a certain amount of time.

What are ‘Messages with due dates’?

In WhatsApp, you can enable a feature called “Messages with expiration date.” This allows you to make your messages disappear after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days right now. So you enable a kind of expiration date for the messages you want to send. After this they disappear and can no longer be read by the recipients. Think of it as a kind of Snapchat that you send, these also disappear and can no longer be viewed by others – unless you save them for yourself. The feature is intended to improve the privacy of conversations for people who want it.

However, the latter still has some hooks and eyes. For example, recipients can of course take a photo of the message, take a screenshot or copy the content of the message with an expiration date. In addition, if your message with due date is forwarded to a chat where the ‘Messages with due date’ feature is disabled, the message in this chat will not disappear.

Multiple durations

As you can read above, you currently have three durations to choose from, after which your messages will be deleted. However, according to WABetaInfo, no less than twelve will be added. Among the three options that are currently available, users will soon be able to choose from ‘multiple options’. If you click on this, the following options will appear: 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 6 days, 14 days, 21 days, 30 days, 60 days, 180 days and 1 year. So plenty of choice. You can see the options in the screenshot below.

Availability

The ability to choose multiple times and/or days is still under development and will first be included in the beta version of WhatsApp Desktop. The feature is also being developed for Android and iOS. It is not yet known exactly when the function can be used by everyone.
