WhatsApp gets a new group chat feature: Community

WhatsApp will become a ‘community’ in the future. Group chat administrators can put multiple chats in one community and, for example, send messages to everyone faster.

That reports WABetaInfo. This website regularly dives into test versions of WhatsApp and is therefore usually the first to know which new features are coming.

The new feature allows group chat admins to merge single group chats into one community. This allows administrators to send announcements to everyone from a single overview, among other things.

It is also possible to create a new group conversation from within the community, or to link existing chats. According to WABetaInfo, a total of up to ten group conversations can be added to a community.

For example, the new community feature is useful for people in education. They can create separate group discussions for different classes and manage them from one overview.

Via the new function it is also possible to send central messages, which everyone receives. Anyone who is added to a WhatsApp Community as a user will have direct access to all linked groups.

More opportunities for companies

Furthermore, WABetaInfo discovered that the business side of the chat app will be expanded soon. In the new test version it is possible to search for nearby companies from WhatsApp. Think of restaurants, supermarkets and clothing stores.

Finally, the website writes that you will soon be able to send media files, such as a photo or video, directly to multiple recipients. That is currently not possible.

When can I get started?

It is not clear when the new features for WhatsApp will be released. WABetaInfo reports that the additions will be hidden in a future update. This new version is first tested by beta users of the chat app. As soon as all the finishing touches have been made, the update will be passed on to all WhatsApp users.
