Which iPads are there?
The iPad family consists of four different iPads. First of all, you have the iPad Pro, a tablet for the professional user. The iPad Pro 2022 is very high-end, has a superior camera and is just as powerful as a MacBook Pro. Very nice, but a bit for the ‘normal’ user overkill†
Below that in the hierarchy are the iPad Air (11 inches) and the iPad mini (8.3 inches). They have the same modern looks as the expensive Pro brother, with a no-home button design. They are also (almost) just as powerful. Still, Apple has made some concessions to make the iPads more affordable. For example, it lacks a dual camera system and ProMotion technology.
But the cheapest iPad that Apple sells is the regular iPad. The latest version is the 9th-generation iPad that the tech giant released in September 2021. For most people, this is the best tablet you can buy from Apple. It’s not the most advanced, but powerful enough for everyday tasks such as surfing the web, Netflix, app and more.
iPad 2021 prices
So the cheapest iPad that Apple sells is the 9th generation iPad. It is available from 389 euros. Exactly how much you pay depends on how much storage capacity you choose, and whether you want a version with Cellular (mobile internet).
These are the iPad 2021 prices that Apple uses:
- iPad 2021 (64 GB, Wi-Fi): 389 euros
- iPad 2021 (256 GB, Wi-Fi): 559 euros
- iPad 2021 (64 GB, Cellular): 529 euros
- iPad 2021 (256 GB, Cellular): 699 euros
You can also buy the iPad outside of Apple. The tablet is often cheaper at online stores than the Apple Store. Do you want to know at which store the iPad 2021 is now the cheapest? View the iPad 2021 price comparison:
The Best Cheap iPad of 2022
Do you want ‘just an iPad’, and don’t plan on using the tablet for graphics-intensive games, editing a cinema-worthy movie, or huge Photoshop projects? Then the 9th generation iPad (from 2021) is the tablet with the best price-quality ratio.
The iPad 2021 has an A13 Bionic chip, which we also know from the iPhone 11 (Pro). That processor is still powerful and can go on for years to come. Support for the Apple Pencil is also available.
You can also go for its predecessor: the iPad 2020. It differs little from its successor. The main difference is that the 2021 iPad has a much better selfie camera: 12 MP instead of 1.2 megapixels. Very nice if you use the iPad for video calling. The iPad 2020 also has a processor that is one year older: the A12 Bionic.
The differences between the iPad 2021 and iPad 2020 are therefore small, but so is the price. If we look at the iPad 2020 price comparison, we see that the older tablet is at most five tens cheaper. This makes the iPad 2021 worth its additional cost, if only because it will be provided with software updates for at least a year longer with its newer processor.
When will the new iPad 2022 come?
Almost every year Apple releases a new generation of the regular iPad; probably also in 2022. It will take a while until that successor comes: Apple is expected to launch the tablet in September 2022. If you are ready for a new iPad, then this is a great time to purchase one.
