We are familiar with flavored water, as is sparkling water. But water with a scent? That’s new. As a parent of school-age children, you may have already seen it: the water bottle with scent pod. If not, we’ll update you on this hype.

And we answer the question: is it healthy?

Water bottle with scent pod

It pops up in many classrooms: the Air Up, a water bottle with a scent pod on top. We hear you thinking: what is that again? It goes like this. On the mouthpiece of the reusable bottle you press a scent pod that – the name says it all – releases a specific scent aroma, such as cherry, lemon or cola. In other words: you drink water, but taste watermelon or peach. This is because our taste experience is not only based on the five flavors, including sweet and salty, but also on smell. “When you chew or swallow, volatile molecules are released from your food or drink,” says Sanne Boesveldt, associate professor of sensory systems and eating behaviour. The watchword. These molecules travel through the back of your throat to your nose. “There they attach themselves to odor receptors, so that you perceive smell.”

Is it healthy?

Such a water bottle with a scent pod is extremely useful for children (and adults) who do not like to drink ‘normal’ water. The different aromas from fruits, plants and herbs make the drink a lot more exciting. Good idea, then. But is it also healthy? According to Boesveldt, yes. “There are no sugars in it that are bad for your health or teeth,” she says. “A scent pod like this provides more options, for example for people who don’t like or find water boring – and there are quite a few – while that is the healthiest option.” Good to know: an Air Up starter kit costs € 34.95 and contains two pods. One pod (from € 5.95 for three pieces) is good for five liters of water. You can see it below.
