VW has apparently solved a major problem
VW wants to offer cheap e-cars, although they will probably not be economically viable for many years to come. The electric Golf could play an important role if its own competition doesn’t get in the way. VW now seems to have a solution for this.
Will the ID.2 disappear? VW should give e-cars other names
VW currently has two long-awaited electric cars in the works, which are finally affordable prices to introduce for the electrical segment. But now it’s clear: two streamers could only become one. The ID.2planned as the cheapest little brother of the successful electric series from VW, could step out of the said series by name and become golf.
The colleagues of the British portal have that car According to their own statements, they learned from insiders at VW. According to this, nothing is certain yet, but serious consideration is apparently being given to not bringing the ID.2 onto the market under this name. VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer had previously made it clear that the Live on as a designation should – even in the age of electric cars.
If VW goes through with this plan, there would probably be quite a reinterpretation of what the name Golf means. So far the ID.2 is viewed as an electric Polo at most. Autocar even expects that the ID.2 and the group brother Cupra Rebel rather than “indirect replacement” for the VW Up or the Seat Mii should apply. However, the two small cars do not even begin to play in the league for which the Golf has stood for decades.
Recently, the ID.4 from VW made a special, small appearance:
Does the e-Golf still deserve a future?
The first technical details speak against this: The ID.2 or ID. Golf – or even just golf? – is said to be the first VW electric car to be based on the improved MEB+ platform. Among other things, it brings a high Charging speed up to 200 kW with itself – with such small e-cars as an Up with a weaker battery, that would make little sense.
The question remains: will VW change the image of the Golf like this or can we still expect other models below the ID.2 in the long term? Or will things turn out differently in the end and the smallest Stromer from the ID series will not become a Golf? With the Presentation of the new concept, which is expected in March, hopefully we will see more clearly.
