Twitter Introduces Gold and Gray Check: Here’s What It Means
When you check Twitter next week, you’ll see a new gold checkmark next to corporate accounts and a gray next to government agency accounts. The blue checkmark, on the other hand, is only intended for accounts of individuals. The checkmarks always indicate that the account in question has been verified.

Gold checkmark Twitter
Twitter has been struggling in recent weeks with its verified account system. After Elon Musk made users pay for a blue tick, it quickly became clear that that was causing problems. For example, a fake account of former United States president George W. Bush was verified, who then tweeted that he missed killing Iraqis.
Paid verifications have since been discontinued and Twitter has stopped processing requests for verifications for some time. Behind the scenes, work is being done on an alternative system, a check mark in three colors, that explains Elon Musk in a comment to a Twitter user. A new gold check mark indicates a verified company account, gray indicates a government agency, and blue indicates an individual.

Difficulties with new system
Musk also states in his tweet that each account is manually verified, which is a chore for Twitter. That is probably even more difficult because a significant part of Twitter employees have recently been laid off, a cost-cutting operation by the new ‘Chief Twit’.
Twitter will start again with the paid verification of accounts for individuals. Anyone can therefore have their account verified for a fee, but the process is now done manually to prevent abuse. This verification may be delayed as a result. At the same time there will also be a system with labels. People can use this to indicate that they are part of an organisation. The new verification system should come into effect from Friday 2 December.
