Twitter accidentally gives users a headache
The Twitter design team thought it would help the user with a handy new color set, but the result was a headache for many.
We all know it: you want to open an app, but in the time that you didn’t use it, the App Store automatically updated it. Suddenly the whole layout is different and you have to look up where all the useful features are. Not convenient.
Headache on Twitter
Some of the people using the Twitter app had something completely different. Twitter was no different, but scrolling could suddenly give you a headache. The reason? Twitter wanted to help users by making the app better, but made it worse.
It all started with the above tweet from Twitter Design. There were tweets about adding new themes. In addition to integrating the new Chirp font, work was also done on the colors. The theme: high contrast in the colors, so that the attention goes to photos and videos.
At the time of the above tweet, it was still a plan, but then there were already complaints. The tweet below is a good example of this. The person in question does not appear to be sensitive, but warns that high contrast often goes hand in hand with headaches for people who are photosensitive.
Now the feature has been rolled out and indeed: Twitter is now giving people a headache. The tweet below is from someone with autism who thinks Twitter is becoming ‘highly uncomfortable’ now. “Hope this is a bad beta.”
A typical case of ‘from bad to worse’. For Twitter there was only one thing to do: back to the drawing board. It seems like all changes are going to be undone.
That said, it wasn’t everyone who suffered from headaches on Twitter. People also tweeted that the change was nice for people without photosensitivity. It is therefore suggested by some to give the version for light-sensitive people as an option. Anyway, reason enough for Twitter to tackle a headache and rethink the options.
