Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion

Hand on heart, if the game reviewed today were not discussed in my favorite game podcast, I probably would never have known of its existence. And if it didn’t have such an incredibly original and enticing name, I probably wouldn’t have bought it, finished it or written about it. But the story of little Turin, who committed a tax evasion, sounds so extremely promising from the beginning that I simply had to inform you about it.

The Legend of Zelenina

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is the debut of the small independent studio Snoozy Kazoo and could best be compared to the classic old Zelda. You follow the action from a bird’s eye view, your hero gradually acquires the tools and abilities needed to overcome a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, and the help from the NPC usually pushes you to the next step.

The game takes you into the world of anthropomorphic vegetables and fruits, which is ruled by the mayor of Cibule. Outside it, however, the small village and the surrounding area offers a number of other bizarre and incredibly cute inhabitants, such as old Citron, a very unpleasant hairdresser Paprička or streamerka Ředkvička (probably), which, however, calls itself SlayQueen32.

As the name suggests, the central mess is Turin’s laziness in filing tax returns, for which he is evicted from home and has to redeem his massive debt through a series of maids for the mayor. Since most of the tasks are variations on a fairy tale about a tap and a hen, you don’t have to worry about getting stuck playing at any time. The whole adventure is very linear and at every moment you know exactly where to go next and what the next step will be.

It should be noted that Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is definitely not a difficult game, and although it contains duels and even a few bosses, reaching the game to the final headlines can not be a problem perhaps even for absolute game amateurs. It should also be added that the game is really very short and for your 15 euros you get about 3 to 4 hours of fun, depending on whether you decide to find all the hidden collectibles.

The cutest avocado in the world

Turnip Boy’s biggest asset is definitely his graphic stylization, whether we are talking about game pixel art or extremely cute dialog screens. Almost every NPC is extremely adorable, whether we are talking about a local researcher, Miss Avocado (who doesn’t look like a moldy avocado on Šárka’s table), or small blueberries or strawberries. An exception is especially Mr. Fire Potato, who makes a living by robbing graves.

Your enemies will first be the evil snails (who feed on vegetables and therefore have to die), and later on, for example, mutated cans. As for fights with bosses, you can look forward to, for example, an overly noisy pig that the above-mentioned streamerce interrupts its broadcast, or a mutated deer.

The second pillar is humor drawn from popular culture and current events. But don’t expect volleys of laughter, which could be caused by the game South Park, for example, Turnip Boy is rather such a small mood to improve your mood, the greatest success of which is when it evokes an amused smile in you. At the same time, it is true that behind a funny and tender facade, there is sometimes a much darker reality. Such a Mr. Borůvka, who is waiting for the payment of rent, could tell about it.

Over time, the protagonist will learn several essential skills that will allow him to perform simple logic puzzles or survive in dangerous conditions. Over time, you will learn that the merry oatmeal empire is on very surprising foundations, and the conclusion of the search will bring a very unsurprising resolution.

Little music for a lot of money

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is a pretty decent summer game to the water. During the game, I was definitely not bored, but I was not driven forward by the gameplay or the story, but rather by the repeatedly mentioned cute stylization and curiosity about what ideas the authors will pull out of their sleeves. Unfortunately, the game lacks any challenge, except for a single bossfight, it is practically impossible to die. In addition, the checkpoints are so benevolently distributed that death has no significant significance.

Currently, the game is available on Switch (where I completed it) and on Steam, where you can collect achievements, unlike the Nintendo console. After finishing, a special NPC will be available to you, which will provide you with tips on the location of collectibles not yet found. In addition to the various books and documents that Turnip Boy tears with grace (similar to the tax call), these are mainly cheerful headgear that has no effect on gameplay, but we all know that gaming fashion always comes first. .

Well, that’s kind of all you can say about the game without grinding into spoilers. Give Turnip Boy a chance if you like funny relaxation games. For me, this is primarily proof that great names have not yet been completely wasted and the authors do not have to limit themselves to the clichoid style of “Something of Something”. And also that not paying taxes is no fun.
