Alternatives to Facebook and Twitter

Elon Musk is the new boss of Twitter and one of his first moves as boss was to cut the board of the social media app. Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal had to resign and Elon Musk wants to make even more changes. He clearly argues for less strict moderation rules and more turnover. He wants to get that money from advertisements and subscriptions such as Twitter Blue. Twitter will look very different in the coming months.

At the same time, things are not running smoothly at Facebook, which has been losing users since this year. In addition, the parent company Meta strongly believes in a future in the metaverse and the company is currently losing billions.

It is not surprising that users are looking for alternatives. The idea behind social media is appealing, as a place where you can find interesting content from others and share useful information yourself. These are three alternatives that you probably haven’t thought of yet.

1. Tumblr

Tumblr has struggled for years to remain relevant, but that persistence has paid off for the social network as well. The Financial Times noted this year that Tumblr is getting back on its feet and is particularly popular with users under the age of 25.

Unlike Twitter, Tumblr is a personal blog that you can manage and personalize yourself. It is of course also possible to follow the content of others, but you can also only entertain yourself with your own blog. You also have control over how others can respond to your content. There are rules about the types of content and comments that are allowed, but you don’t have to worry about the length of posts like on Twitter. Like most other social media apps, Tumblr makes money from targeted advertising.

2. Reddit

Reddit calls itself “the front page of the internet”. On Reddit, topics of conversation are more clearly defined than on most social media apps, as the entire platform is made up of different subreddits. In such a subreddit a very specific topic is discussed: from news about the Netherlands to gardening and a very specific meme. Reddit brings together people from all over the world who share a common interest.

Anyone can post to a subreddit themselves, but moderators keep each group in order. When a group fails to keep it tidy, it is shut down by Reddit. You can actively participate in one or more subreddits with your own posts on Reddit, but you can also just follow the subreddits that you find interesting.

3. Mastodon

Mastodon is the most similar to Twitter of all apps, but this social network is strong with its privacy-friendly choices. It does not contain targeted advertising, but Mastodon, on the other hand, is developed by a non-profit company that receives donations from users.

Just like on Twitter, the number of characters of a message is limited, to 500 in the case of Mastodon. The social network warns against sensitive content and there is strict moderation. You can also join groups on Mastodon and have more control over who sees and responds to your posts.
