TikTok users can now negatively rate comments within the app. However, the so-called downvotes should not be publicly visible. TikTok is primarily hoping for feedback from the function inappropriate content. However, it is questionable whether the users will also use the button in this way.
TikTok has been working on a so-called dislike button for some time. In April 2022, the company announced an initial test phase.
Even then, the video platform announced that the function was primarily about getting feedback on inappropriate comments. Now the Bytedance daughter announced Twitter the worldwide release of the function.

According to this, TikTok hopes that the feature will above all “better identify irrelevant or inappropriate comments”. That, in turn, would help “encourage a comments section for real and authentic interactions.”

Negative reviews are not visible
To prevent misuse of the function, according to TikTok, the dislikes are not publicly visible. Neither the author of a comment nor other users could see the negative ratings. This, in turn, should help to “offer a better experience to the community”.
However, it seems extremely questionable whether users of the platform actually use the downvotes in this way. Rather, numerous users may simply use the dislike button to indicate that they do not like a comment.
Other social networks also rely on the principle of a dislike button. For example, YouTube users have been able to rate videos both positively and negatively for quite some time. However, in November 2021, the company said goodbye to the dislike feature.

Meanwhile, Twitter expanded its downvote function after a test phase. There, too, users can rate content negatively. Like TikTok, Twitter is primarily hoping for a feedback effect without displaying the dislikes. Of the
Social news aggregator Reddit, on the other hand, shows its users how many negative votes a comment has received.
