Find, edit and send WhatsApp gifs
It has been possible to search for and send gifs in WhatsApp for some time now. While other apps highlight this feature, WhatsApp hides it a bit. After a recent update of WhatsApp, you will find the gifs in a different place than before and different categories have been added.

Find gifs through whatsapp
To search gifs directly through WhatsApp, go through the following steps.
- Open WhatsApp on your iPhone;
- Choose a conversation from the chat overview;
- Tap the sticker icon in the typing bar;
- Choose the ‘GIF’ button;
- Then tap the magnifying glass next to the “GIF” button.
- Finally, enter the search term to find a gif.
Now you can search the Giphy database extensively. Here you use words that generally describe the gif, such as “applause,” “no,” or “facepalm.” It is now also possible to search for gifs in different categories. You can find this at the bottom of the screen. This way you can easily find a poison that fits the situation. If you tap on a gif, you first get the chance to edit it.
Edit GIFs in WhatsApp
When you choose a gif, you first get the option to edit it. Many other services do not offer this option. For example, it is possible to shorten the gif with the bar at the top of the screen. If you drag the sides inward, you’ll make sure the gif is cropped in length. If you press the crop button, the gif can be rotated or resized.
You can also decorate the gif by adding stickers, text or drawings. Tap the emoji button to add an emoji as a sticker to the gif. You then determine the size of the smiley yourself. To add text, tap the letter “T”. After that, you will be given the option to type words and sentences in any color. With the pencil you finish the gif by drawing over it.
To undo an edit, press the back button at the top of the screen. Are you all done editing? Then you have the option to add a caption, but that is not mandatory. To send, press the blue send button. It is of course also possible not to edit the gif. In that case, you immediately press the blue send button at the bottom right of the screen.
Save gifs as favorites
If you use Giphy’s search engine, you don’t have to look up your favorite gif every time. You can mark gifs as favorites. To do this, hold your finger on the gif for a few seconds during a conversation. In the menu that appears, you will find the option ‘Starred’. Tap this to save the gif.

To find saved gifs, go to the same place you normally look for gifs within WhatsApp. At the bottom of the screen are several tabs, with your most recent and favorite gifs on the far left. You can find your favorites here under the star icon. Your most recent gifs are collected under the clock to its left.
Find and send gifs through Gboard
Another way to find gifs is through Gboard. This keyboard from Google has built-in GIF search. This allows you to send gifs in all apps and you are therefore not dependent on the functions of the app.
To search for and send gifs in WhatsApp via Gboard, follow these steps.
- Open WhatsApp;
- Go to a conversation;
- Tap the face in the right corner of the keyboard;
- Swipe to the right at the gifs and choose ‘More’;
- Choose the gif you want to send by tapping it, and Gboard will copy the gif to your clipboard;
- Tap the text field and press Paste to edit and send the gif.
The downside to Gboard is that the gifs can no longer be edited before you send them. Copying and pasting is also slightly more cumbersome than if you select gifs via WhatsApp itself. The big advantage is that you can send the gifs in any app, including Snapchat or Instagram, for example. Gboard is free to install in the App Store:
