Disney + is starting one offensive after the other – new content, more channels, but also more costs. One film has now achieved the next superlative, none of which has been streamed anymore.

Disney’s still comparatively young streaming service is increasingly becoming a guarantee of success for the group. In December, the number of subscription customers exceeded expectations. At the same time, Disney + has set another record.

Pixar’s “Soul” has a successful start at Disney +

With the latest production from Pixar, which, like the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, belongs to Disney, the most streamed film of Christmas 2020 will be shown at Disney: “Soul”. The animated drama about the soul of a deceased musician and their journey after death even knocked “The Office” – the long-running hit on the US Nielsen streaming charts – from the throne.

According to Deadline Soul achieved the most streaming time between December 21 and 27, at around 1.7 billion minutes. Not least impressive because the animated film was only released on December 25th, which means it collected the streaming minutes in just three days. At the same time, two Disney titles made it into the top 10 for the first time in the same week: the Star Wars series “The Mandalorian” landed in 5th place in the streaming rankings in the USA.

“Star” is supposed to take Disney + to a new level

Disney can be quite satisfied with the performance of its own streaming portal. When there was criticism of the extra costs at the start of the real-life version of Mulan last year, Soul now shows that there is another way. Here, too, the classic cinema premiere had to be canceled due to the corona pandemic. The echo, however, is different: From critics and audience, Soul receives a rating of 83 out of 100 possible points at Metacritic.

However, the success of Disney + is offset by the fact that prices will rise in a few weeks. Disney + also recently discontinued free trial access. On the other hand, a new channel, “Star”, should start at the end of February. There content for the adult audience is offered in the stream.
