this apple product was so bad it was never released

Photos have surfaced of a prototype Apple MagSafe charger. The special thing about this is that it can also be used as a stand. Why are we glad Apple didn’t release this? Feel free to read on…

Photos of crazy MagSafe charger

Do you have a MagSafe charger at home? If so, you’ll be very happy with it. With these chargers, Apple has designed a perfect combination between wired and wireless charging. MagSafe chargers magnetically snap onto the back of your iPhone, charging instantly. No fiddling with the Lightning connection, but also no worries that you haven’t placed your iPhone properly on the wireless charging mat.

Sometimes we ask iPhoned wonder why Apple doesn’t make many more MagSafe accessories. Like this prototype that has now surfaced in photos of an Asian collector.

Cool concept, mediocre execution

On paper, the ‘Apple Magic Charger’ sounds really cool. The idea is that you have a charger and stand for your iPhone in one. Just like the Lightning dock from years ago. The Magic Charger looks like a regular MagSafe charger, but encircled by an aluminum base with rounded corners. By placing your iPhone on it, you charge it.

The charger becomes ‘magical’ because you can flip the MagSafe puck section over so you have a kickstand. Sounds great, right? Well, yes and no. Because as you know, the MagSafe magnets are in the middle of the phone. So the only way you can use the Magic Charger as a stand is to place your phone on it in landscape mode. Perhaps useful for videos, but in most cases we want to use our iPhone in portrait mode with a stand.

What do you think?

At iPhoned we are very curious about your opinion? If Apple had released this Magic Charger, would you have bought it? Apple’s MagSafe accessories so far are a bit hit or miss. The regular charger is fine, but the MagSafe Duo, for example, is way too expensive. The MagSafe wallet may be cool (especially with the Find My support), but the MagSafe power bank looks very strange. In which category do you think the Magic Charger belongs?
