Buks app

During The Preface to the Boekenweek from 6 to 14 March we like to immerse ourselves in exciting stories, and smartphones also work great as e-readers. There are many well-known apps for e-books, including Kindle from Amazon and Kobo. Buks is an app that focuses on free digital books, all from Project Gutenberg. That’s a collection of more than 60,000 free e-books. All books by Buks are free of copyright, which happens automatically when a work is more than 100 years old, for example.

Buks lets you download all books as an epub or mobi file, plus there’s also the option to send books directly to a Kindle device. You have to enter the e-mail address of your e-reader in the app, and then you can forward books.

Generate book covers

Although perhaps the most interesting aspect of this app is the artificial intelligence with which it automatically generates book covers through machine learning. Buks uses a generative antagonist network (GAN) for this. Such a GAN consists of two systems that compete with each other. The first system generates a cover based on the subject of the book, while the second system critically assesses the work of the first. In this way there is an interaction whereby a work of art is generated.
