These Volvos will soon receive support for CarPlay
After Polestar, Volvo has also started adding support for CarPlay in various car models. The update is coming in over the air. This is what you need to know.

Volvo now with CarPlay
Volvo adds Apple CarPlay to several models that did not yet have iPhone integration. An update unlocks CarPlay in Volvos that use Android Automotive as the operating system.
When you plug in your iPhone, you use certain iOS apps and features, from music to navigation, through your car’s infotainment system. In addition, Apple’s voice assistant Siri is also on board.
Install the update yourself – or at the dealer
The update is available for the two fully electric models Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge Pure Electric. It is also offered for the XC60, S90 and V90 from model year 2022. The S60, V60, XC90 and XC40 from model year 2023 (but only with Android Automotive) are also available. You install the update ‘over-the-air’, so just from the car itself. Alternatively, you can go to your dealer, says Volvo. The new software version 2.2 has been gradually rolled out since mid-July.
By the way, you can also easily make CarPlay wireless in these models, via our overview of dongles for wireless CarPlay.
Volvo’s sister brand Polestar already added CarPlay in June for the Polestar 2 model, which also uses Android as its car operating system. Noteworthy: Android Automotive thus supports CarPlay for the integration of the iPhone in these vehicles, but not Android Auto for Android phones.
The new generation of CarPlay
In addition to Polestar, Apple has also named Volvo as a partner for the next generation of CarPlay, which brings Apple’s operating system to the entire dashboard. Direct control of functions such as seat heating and air conditioning will also be possible via CarPlay or Siri, according to Apple.
It remains unclear in which Volvo’s CarPlay 2 will be used. When presenting the system, Apple emphasized that the first vehicles with the new CarPlay generation will not be announced until the end of 2023.
