Expectations for 2023
That we are smart at Androidworld – and a bit clever – you already knew that, of course. That we also have a talent for looking into a crystal ball is new. However, we all seem to have the so-called ‘sixth sense’ in the editorial office.
For example, if we look at our expectations of smartphones in 2022, it turns out that we were quite right. This is reflected in our review. We weren’t right about everything, though. Will our expectations of smartphones for smartphones in 2023 also come true? In any case, we list our expectations for you below.

1. Bye bye cameras
In 2022 we had already predicted fewer cameras on a smartphone, because our crystal ball showed an image in which we saw things disappear. However, when Sebastien took another good look at the bulb, he saw the mistake we made. He was the only one in the editorial team to see that the number 23 was visible in the sphere, which of course refers to 2023.
2023 must therefore be the year in which we say goodbye to several nonsensical camera lenses. Think of a 2 MP macro camera or a depth sensor. We will probably see less of these lenses – which are mainly placed on smartphones for marketing reasons – next year. Samsung, among others, will omit them on the Galaxy A14, A34 and A54. We think that several smartphone manufacturers will follow suit. In addition, LG has developed a new camera module that can zoom variably. As a result, we may eventually go back to one or two cameras on the back of our smartphone. You can read more about this new camera technology in this article.
2. Finally more foldables
In 2019 we were watching the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S10 series with a big bucket of popcorn. However, we secretly did not look specifically for that device, but for one of the first foldable smartphones in the world: the Galaxy Fold. The smartphone market welcomed an entirely new concept and technology. Soon there was speculation and thought about what else we could expect. But now, almost four years later, things are a bit disappointing. It is mainly Samsung that has come onto the market with a number of foldables, but we thought we would have moved on by now.
Other manufacturers have also launched foldable smartphones in recent years, but the majority of these were not released worldwide. This seems to change in 2023. OPPO is marketing a Flip competitor and Google seems to want to fold its Pixel. Will 2023 finally be the year in which we will see different ‘types’ of foldables from multiple manufacturers worldwide? And partly because of this, the development will get going again and the foldable smartphones will really break through? If this happens, foldables will no longer be the biggest tech disappointment of the year.

3. Google will adjust update policy
This cannot and should not fail, Google must adjust its update policy this year. The search giant – and maker of Android – now equips its latest Pixel smartphones with three Android upgrades and five years of security updates. Samsung, OnePlus and OPPO do this better and offer four Android upgrades and five years of security updates for their new high-end devices. Google should at least match this. However?

4. Durability, fast-load megapixels: Building on last year
We also think that many things will be elaborated on. Think durability, fast charging and the once again waged ‘megapixel war’. For example, we expect that many smartphone manufacturers will start using or misusing the word ‘recycled’ again. We also think that fast charging will become even faster and smartphones will be launched with a camera with 250 megapixels or more.
