There is now a Barbie with Down syndrome
Every child should recognize themselves in a doll and be able to play with a doll that does not look like them, says toy manufacturer Mattel. That’s why they are now launching a Barbie with Down syndrome. With the doll, the manufacturer hopes to combat stigma.
According to the American patient organization for people with Down syndrome and medical professionals, with whom the Barbie was created in collaboration, the doll is “a faithful representation” of women with Down syndrome. “The face is rounder, with smaller ears and a flat bridge of the nose, while the almond-shaped eyes are slightly slanted,” said Mattel. The doll is also shorter, has a longer upper body and has a so-called four-finger hand line over the hands, a well-known characteristic of Down’s syndrome.

Every child must recognize himself
With the doll, Mattel hopes to contribute to a more inclusive society. “Playing with a doll that comes from a different world can give the child more understanding and a greater sense of empathy,” says Lisa McKnight on behalf of the toy manufacturer. “We want to give all children the chance to see themselves in Barbie while encouraging them to play with dolls that don’t look like them.” The Dutch model and influencer Enya, who herself has Down syndrome, is participating in the launch of the Barbie. She is happy that the doll makes children aware of diversity and inclusion at an early age. “That you, I, and everyone else, belong, that we are all beautiful, and that Down syndrome is part of us, society and the world,” she tells AD.
Includes dolls
In addition to a Barbie with Down’s syndrome, there are also dolls with skin disease vitiligo, a prosthetic leg, in a wheelchair and with a hearing aid. Curious how children with Down syndrome react to the Barbie? Check out the sweet images below.
