With the successor approaching, it is time for a review update of the iPhone SE 2020. Unfortunately, we cannot make it more beautiful, but this year this compact smartphone is really no longer recommended. iPhoned explains why.

When the iPhone SE 2020 came out, we were pretty excited about it. It was an excellent smartphone and there was no better deal in this price range. We are now two years later and we now know that a successor is coming (very) soon. That’s why the iPhone SE 2020 is the worst iPhone you can buy right now.

iPhone SE 2020 design

The iPhone SE 2020 is identical to the iPhone 8 on the outside and that makes it look quite dated. The thick screen edges at the top and bottom are very old-fashioned in 2022. Almost every other smartphone now has a display that fills almost the entire front. Furthermore, the iPhone SE has another function of the iPhone 8: Touch ID. The device is therefore equipped with a physical home button. This is at the bottom, just like the iPhone 8.

According to the latest rumors, the design will not change with the successor, iPhone SE 2022. So you have to do it with the future version of this entry-level iPhone.

The iPhone SE runs on the A13 chip, which you know from the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. Apple usually supports its devices for five to six years, which means that the SE 2020 will last for a few more years.

Fast charging and wireless charging

It is also nice that the iPhone SE 2020 supports fast charging, provided you have the right adapter. After half an hour, the iPhone is half full and a full charge does not take long either. Wireless charging is also available, which is also a welcome feature.

Compact, but sometimes just too small

The iPhone SE 2020 is primarily a very compact device, so you can easily hold and operate it with one hand. But typing on the small screen takes some practice and the 4.7 inch display is actually just too small to properly enjoy videos and games. In addition, you also notice while surfing that the screen is sometimes really on the small side and that some websites are no longer optimized for these small screens.

The SE takes reasonable photos, provided you have enough daylight. In the dark, pictures are quickly grainy, also because there is no Night mode. You can, however, take portrait photos where the iPhone recognizes people and blurs the background. That still produces a great effect.

iPhone SE 2020 vs iPhone SE 2022

It is important to consider the successor to the iPhone SE 2020: the iPhone SE 2022. At first glance, not much will change about the youngest member of the iPhone SE family. But the adjustments that Apple will probably make will ensure that you no longer have to buy the old iPhone SE in 2022.

The iPhone SE 2022 will most likely have the exact same design as the current version. But the most important changes can be found under the hood. These are a more powerful A15 Bionic chip and support for 5G, which makes the entry-level iPhone much more future-proof.

In addition, we expect the suggested retail price to remain unchanged. This would mean that iPhone SE 2022 has a starting price of 489 euros. This means that the SE has a very competitive price, while it is completely up to date with the A15 and 5G support.

The price of a new iPhone SE 2020 has dropped a few tens, to 442.95 euros. But even then, the price difference is still far too low not to wait a while and opt for the iPhone SE 2022

Conclusion

In 2021, the iPhone SE 2020 was still a good buy. But in 2022 we know that a new iPhone SE 2022 is coming (very) soon. That’s why it’s better to ignore the iPhone SE from two years ago and wait a little longer. For a new iPhone SE 2022 you will pay about the same as the older iPhone SE from 2020, but you will get a more powerful A15 Bionic chip and 5G support. This makes the new entry-level iPhone a lot more future-proof.

It’s just a shame that the design of the iPhone SE 2020 and 2022 is now quite outdated. In addition, the screen is really small and you notice that especially when surfing. Are you therefore looking for a modern and compact smartphone with a slightly larger screen? Then the iPhone 13 mini is worth considering, but keep in mind that you have to pay a lot more.
