The smartphone market is returning to normal, Xiaomi preparing to attack
After last year’s weakening due to the outbreak of a pandemic, the smartphone segment is gradually recovering and manufacturers are trying to achieve the highest possible sales volumes.
The European smartphone market even showed 6% year-on-year growth during the first quarter of 2021. According to the SamMobile portal, three countries – Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands – contributed to the above-mentioned results.
Samsung on the front
Well-known names are on the first places in sales. In Denmark, the Samsung unit has a market share of 36%. The problems of the Chinese giant Huawei, whose smartphones came to the back, were supposed to help achieve a dominant position.
Samsung also made it to the first place in Denmark. At the end of 2020, Apple was in first place. In the first quarter of 2021, it was already Samsung with a market share of 40%. Apple moved to second place, Xiaomi took third place and Huawei top four in Denmark. The market showed year-on-year growth of 28%.
The sale of smartphones was also successful in the case of the Netherlands. In the year-on-year comparison, there was a 14% growth, with Samsung again taking first place in terms of market share.
The market is remembering, Xiaomi is grinding his teeth
These figures point to the fact that the market is really starting to turn green and is showing expected growth. In addition to the growing number of units sold, the average price of smartphones that found a new owner also increased in the monitored markets. Therefore, large smartphone manufacturers are currently preparing for a strong period.
Samsung is doing well, but the competition is not sleeping. China’s Xiaomi, which currently holds the position of world number three, expects to show really dramatic growth in three to five years’ time. And to such an extent that it surpasses Samsung and takes over the position of the world unit. The GizmoChina portal addressed the topic.
Second place within reach
At first glance, this is a truly ambitious goal, but current figures suggest that it may not be a vain hope at all. Xiaomi wants to beat Apple later this year to become the second largest smartphone manufacturer. Taking into account the year-on-year growth achieved, this goal is within reach. The difference between the second and third place is currently just over 3 million smartphones sold.
In the foreseeable future, sales of Xiaomi are expected to be driven by the Mi 11 Ultra and Mi MIX Fold models. On the other hand, in the case of Apple, a new smartphone is not expected to be launched, so there is a real chance that the pair will swap positions during the second quarter of 2021. Of course, it is questionable how long this exchange would last. What is certain is that Xiaomi is preparing to attack.
